A £125 million scheme to improve congestion and reduce journey times for driver on the A19 in South Tyneside has started.

Once complete, drivers will enjoy better access to and from the A19 improving journeys across the region and to the new £41m International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP) and Nissan plant in Sunderland, which is currently being built and is expected to create thousands of jobs.

The major upgrade will see the A19 raised above the existing Testo’s roundabout and new slip roads built to connect Testo’s roundabout to the A184. This will create a free-flowing A19 as drivers will no longer need to negotiate a junction, and can instead continue uninterrupted.

New routes will be provided through the junction for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders. Access between Testos roundabout and nearby Downhill Lane junction will also be provided using new road links.

This scheme is crucial to the success of the International Advanced Manufacturing Park.

With the park expected to create more than 7,000 jobs over the next decade it is vital that we have the right transport infrastructure in place to support it.

The A19 is one of the region’s key assets and these improvements will not only increase capacity, reduce journey times and reduce congestion, but promote economic growth and maximise employment and investment opportunities.”
