The Prime Minister Theresa May has announced her resignation in a speech outside number 10 Downing Street.
In a speech that ended tearfully she said she would step down on June 7, paving the way for a Conservative leadership election to take place to install her successor.
How have our region's Conservative MPs reacted?
Theresa May was not without her support from the North East's Conservative MPs.
Guy Opperman, MP for Hexham, said it was "an honour" to work alongside her.
Julian Smith, MP for Skipton and Ripon, who has served as one of Theresa May's closest allies in his role as Chief Whip, said the Prime Minister had shown integrity throughout her premiership.
Simon Clarke, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, did not specifically say anything himself but did retweet comments from Boris Johnson, who himself is considered a frontrunner to be the next Prime Minister.
