Mugger holds knife to baby's throat and demands grandmother's purse in terrifying robbery

A mugger held a knife to a baby's throat and demanded a grandmother handed over her purse. Detectives are appealing for witnesses the family's terrifying ordeal in Normanby.

A woman in her 40s was approached as she pushed her 19-month-old grandson along Ormesby Road, along a section hidden from the road by woods.

The man sprang from the bushes in front of her and demanded the woman's purse, between 5pm and 6pm on Friday. When she refused the man produced a knife and placed it to her grandchild's throat.

The victim then handed over her purse and the man ran off towards Normanby High Street.

Fortunately, the child was not injured.

The victim has described the suspect to police as an "Asian male" with "very bad teeth" and a "foreign accent".

  • Around 6ft tall
  • Of a medium build
  • With short black hair
  • He was wearing a black tracksuit with one red stripe down the side and a black leather belt with a pouch around his waist.
  • He was wearing black and gold 'Nike' brand trainers.

DC Lewis Mackfall, of Cleveland Police, said:

This was clearly a terrifying incident for the victim and very distressing as it involved a threat of violence against her grandchild. We're appealing for anyone who might have seen a man matching this description to speak to us urgently by calling 101 with reference number 086712."
