Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady has signed a one-year contract extension with the club.

The new deal will see McGeady stay on Wearside until the end of the 2020-21 season.

McGeady's extension will be welcome news to Black Cats fans. The Irishman was a key figure in the side's run to the League One Play-Off Final and strong showing in the League.

He contributed 14 goals and six assists in last season's campaign. His general attacking movement and ability on the ball were also influential.

McGeady said: "I’m delighted to have extended my contract at the Stadium of Light, and I’m looking forward to the new season.

"I’m enjoying my football and, like everyone else associated with the club, I’m confident that we can achieve promotion during the upcoming campaign.”

Manager Jack Ross said he was pleased that he'd secured the services of one of his most experienced players.

He said: "Aiden was an important player for us last season, and he has a real desire to bring success to the football club.

"His quality on the pitch speaks for itself, but he also brings a wealth of experience to the dressing room.

"He enjoys playing for Sunderland, and I’m delighted that he has committed his future to the club."

McGeady has been capped 93 times by the Republic of Ireland and has made over 65 appearances for the Black Cats.
