Three-week-old baby boy who died after being stabbed in Wallsend named as Andrei Stefan

A three-week-old baby boy, who died after being stabbed on North Tyneside, can now be named.

Andrei Stefan died in hospital on Sunday, after the incident in Portland Close in Wallsend, on the 2nd of October.

The baby's mother - 21 year old Andreea Stefan - remains in a stable condition in hospital, after suffering serious injuries.

27-year-old Denis Erdinch Beytula is currently charged with two counts of attempted murder and is due back at Newcastle Crown Court at the end of the month.

A reporting restriction had originally been in place preventing the child being identified. On lifting the restriction District Judge Bernard Begley said that the baby's death was a "tragic case".

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Cole, of Northumbria Police, said of Andrei'sdeath:

This is a devastating time for the baby's family. Specialist officers continue to offer them support and I know the community in Wallsend are by their side too.
