A whale, stranded off the coast of Northumberland, has now beached on the sandbanks.

Crowds gathered and lined the shore of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea to try and see what experts say is a 'once in a lifetime sight'.

The 40-foot long sperm whale was first spotted off Church Point before swimming towards cliffs near Beach Terrace, then Sandy Bay.

Wildlife experts on the scene said they believe the whale is a male and unlikely to survive in the shallow water.

  • Residents hoped for a 'happy ending' for the whale

ITV Tyne Tees shot drone footage from a responsible and safe distance from Sandy Bay. The video shows the size of the whale as the tide went out.

Our reporter Amy Lea followed the story for us on the Northumberland coastline today, alongside marine life experts.
