A man has been arrested after a pharmacy was raided and a large amount of medication was stolen.

The theft happened at Boots on Stamfordham Road, Cowgate, shortly before 3.20am on Monday.

Those responsible stole a variety of strong painkillers from the Newcastle store – prompting police to warn the public of the potential dangers of taking any unprescribed drugs.

The 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary by officers investigating the incident. He is in police custody "assisting officers with their enquiries".

A quantity of drugs, which believed to have been stolen from the premises have also been seized by officers.

PC Daniel Burke, of Northumbria Police, said:

I would like to thank those members of the public who have come forward and assisted us with the investigation since the appeal earlier this week.

Enquiries into this incident are ongoing, and we will continue to speak to one man in connection with the burglary throughout the day.

While we have seized some of the medication believed to have been stolen from the pharmacy, our message remains one of vigilance. This kind of medication could cause harm to anybody who takes it without being prescribed to them, so if anyone comes into contact with it, please hand it in to police.
