A family's pet cat has been killed after it was shot in North Yorkshire.

Police in the county are appealing for witnesses and information following the incident.

Two cats were shot with what is believed to be a pellet gun in Kirkbymoorside. This was on West End at about 5pm on Sunday.

The cat pictured above died as a result of the attack.

A second animal, which belonged to the same family, was also injured but survived the attack after it was treated by a vet.

A spokesperson for the force said:

We are requesting the public’s assistance to help establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

In particular, we are appealing to anyone with any information about those responsible to get in touch.
