Hundreds of thousands of people are thought to have attended this year's Lumiere festival in Durham, including the millionth visitor.

The bi-annual event, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, came to a close last night.

First estimates put the number of visitors at 165,000.

It started on Thursday and featured 37 installations and projections, which were designed to showcase the work of both international and local artists working in the medium of light.

A spokesperson for the event said:

Iconic landmarks were transformed, including Durham Cathedral, lit up from within by candlelit installation Spirit, whilst the public could manipulate the sound and light installation Stones on the historic building’s exterior.
