Neighbours have told of their shock after a car crashed into a house and burst into flames.
People on Goathland Avenue, in Longbenton, say they were woken up by a loud bang on Sunday morning and saw that a vehicle had ploughed into the wall of a home.
They saw the vehicle on fire and rang the emergency services.
Gavin March-Murray, who lives in the area, said he ran to help as soon as he saw what happened.
Another neighbour said:
Police say the car veered off the road, crossed a garden in front of the property and then hit a wall.
The force received reports there may have been three people in the vehicle at the time, who all left the scene after the collision.
Investigations are ongoing and officers are appealing for witnesses.
