Four children in every North East primary class face Christmas without warmth or fresh food according to charity Action for Children.
The charity has analysed official figures from the Department of Work and Pensions Family Resources Survey which shows the North East is the worst affected region in the Country.
Action for Children says nearly 55,000 children aged under 10, face the festive season without basics like a heated home, warm winter coat or fresh food.
The charity is planning to host unofficial foodbanks over the school holidays when free school meals are not available.
A Government spokesperson said: "We know some families need more support, that is why we are spending over £95 billion a year on working age benefits."
