Senior civil servants from the Treasury - the Government department responsible for public finances - have visited Teesside for their first trip in a programme to get outside of London since the General Election.

The group met with local politicians and business people.

They went to sites across the area, including former SSI site in Redcar as well as Teesside University and the TWI’s Offshore Wind Validation Centre in Middlesbrough.

A spokesperson for the department said the visit was a chance for officials to learn about the experience of local devolution, pointing out that it is different geographically to other high-profile areas with directly elected mayors such as London and Greater Manchester.

The Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Rishi Sunak MP, who represents Richmond at Westminster, said:

But levelling up is about more than just investment, it’s about reaching out and understanding the unique challenges each region faces. Bringing the Treasury to Teesside marks a significant step in our bid to ensure that communities in every corner of the country benefit as we unleash Britain’s potential.

Abbas Mohimi, Business Development Manager at TWI, said:

We were delighted to welcome the Treasury to TWI’s Offshore Wind Validation Centre and highlight our work in the sector. Offshore developments represent a huge growth opportunity for the region and we are proud to be playing an important role in supporting our local businesses.
