Durham Fire & Ice Festival underway

The Durham Fire & Ice Festival got underway on Saturday, despite the wet weather.

The festival displays a collection of ice sculptures themed around the words 'Travelling through time'.

Watch Kris Jepson's report here:

Exhibits include models of the Delorean from Back to the Future, Tardis from Dr Who and Stephenson's Rocket.

This is the fifth event, which the organisers say is the biggest daytime event in Durham.

The Fire and Ice festival has become the largest annual draw to the city, which is great because it puts Durham on the map, draws people in and encourages people to come back time and time again.

The artists crafting the ice sculptures, Glacial Art, are former Sunderland Uni students who also worked on the sets for Game of Thrones.

With the live carvings, I mean I love doing the interactive ones because people come over and chat to us. Quite a lot of my days I’m in a freezer by myself. It’s nice. I enjoy my job, but you don’t get to interact with people so when we’re at these street events everyone sees your work and we get to see everyone’s reactions and we get to interact with the public, so that’s the best part of it.
