Police have launched a hunt for a customer who coughed in a Tesco employee's face and spat at a member of the public amid heightened fears about the spread of coronavirus.
Officers were called to the retailer's petrol station at Kingston Park, Newcastle, just before 10am on Saturday, following an incident during which a customer came to the cashier's aid.
Northumbria Police said they were investigating a case of common assault.
A spokesman said: "It was reported that shortly before 10am, a man coughed in the face of a staff member.
"When confronted by a customer, the man began acting aggressively and proceeded to spit in the direction of the member of the public."
The force asked anyone with information to contact them via the Tell Us Something section of the Northumbria Police website.
