Retail landlord Intu has said it is in 'ongoing dialogue' with the government as it hopes to secure funding from its £330bn Coronavirus support package.
Intu, which operates the Metrocentre and Eldon Square sites in Gateshead and Newcastle, said it had only received 29% of rent payments that had been due on Wednesday.
It added that it was still in discussion with customers over outstanding rents.
The government announced on Monday that businesses would be able to avoid their quarterly rent payments for the next three months without forfeiting their leases.
Intu said it now has "significantly reduced capital expenditure" for the foreseeable future and is cutting back on head office costs in a bid to preserve cash.
