Nissan will resume vehicle production at its factory in Wearside next month.

This was halted in March due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

The plant has been used to manufacture personal protective equipment since then.

A spokesperson for the Japanese manufacturer said that work had been carried out at the plant in Sunderland to allow staff to work safely. The phased return will start on Monday, June 8.

They said:

A phased resumption of vehicle production will begin at Nissan Sunderland Plant on Monday 8th June.

“This resumption has been made possible following extensive work at the plant to allow the safe return of our employees, with a full and comprehensive set of measures in place to protect staff.

The Sunderland plant opened in 1986 and employs about 7,000 people.
