Weather: Record breaking sunshine - but it comes with a price

It would be hard to have missed the fact that the weather has been warm, dry and sunny recently.

Now we know this spell of weather is RECORD BREAKING.

Spring is not even over yet - but already the months of March, April, and May are the sunniest the UK has recorded (records date back to 1929).

Figures from the Met Office show that, up to 27 May, Spring 2020 has already recorded over 573 hours of sunshine, with four more days worth to be added to that.

Since 1929 there have been only nine UK springs recording more than 500 hours of sunshine, with the previous sunniest being 555.3 hours in 1948.

A dry spring

But the sunny weather has a price - lack of rain.

The 'dark brown' on the maps above show where we have seen significantly lower rainfall than average.
