A body found in woodland in County Durham is believed to be that of missing man Gordon Marriott.

Mr Marriott, 51, went missing from his home in Horden in January.

Last Friday a body was found near the cricket pavilion in Peterlee Dene, Peterlee, by two members of the public.

Officers at Durham Constabulary have said that DNA testing is still being carried out but they believe it is Mr Marriott.

Police are treating the death as "suspicious" and officers remain at the scene.

Detective Chief Superintendent Adrian Green, who is leading the investigation, said:

The police activity has continued in the area all week while we work to establish the circumstances which led up to the body being found.

DCS Adrian Green, Durham Constabulary
