South Tyneside Council says there's outrage in the area because hand sanitiser stations are being smashed in shopping centres for the alcohol inside them. Dispensers across South Shields are being smashed and the liquid transferred into bottles so it can be drank.Councillor Pat Hay posted about the problem on Facebook and it followeddozens of comments by other people reporting similar incidents. She said seven of the 14 dispensers set up at the Nook shopping area had to be removed due to damage.

The dispensers were installed to help protect people during the Coronavirus pandemic.

This is totally unacceptable and we urge people to behave responsibly. These points have been installed for the benefit of the whole community and in line with Government guidance around social distancing and hand hygiene to help prevent further spread of COVID-19.
