Redcar's new seaside landmark, will be named the Redcar Beacon after a public vote.

Almost 500 names were submitted by the public and were short-listed by a panel which included local residents.

The building had been given the working name "Vertical Pier".

The pier, which is the main focus of the redevelopment the town forms part of Redcar & Cleveland Council seafront regeneration plans.

The structure is now complete and work has begun on the interior and the landscaping around the Redcar Beacon.

The Redcar Beacon polled 156 of the 939 votes cast, ahead of Lemon Top Tower with 133 and Vertical Pier in third place on 129.

It is anticipated that the attraction will open to the public early next year.
