The administrators for HMV have confirmed that the famous name will disappear from at least four of the region's high streets.

The branches in South Shields, Durham, Stockton and the Teesside Shopping Park will close, with the loss of thirty nine jobs.

HMV closure 'a shame' - McElderry

The X Factor winner Joe McElderry says that it is "a shame" the HMV store in his home town of South Shields is to close.

The store was the scene of his first big public appearance after winning the competition in 2009.

He told me that walking into a store, browsing and picking up a copy of your favourite artist's song is "what music is all about".

However, he admits most of the music he buys now is online.

HMV acknowledges 'invaluable contribution' of staff

HMV stores will close 'in the next one to two months'

In a statement, the Joint Administrators said "There is no fixed date for the closure of these stores which will continue to trade in the meantime. However, it is expected that closures will take place over the next one to two months."

Nick Edwards, Joint Administrator, commented: “As part of our ongoing review of HMV’s financial position, we have now completed a review of the store portfolio and have identified 66 loss making stores for closure. This step has been taken in order to enhance the prospects of securing the business’ future as a going concern.

“We continue to receive strong support from staff and are extremely grateful to them for their commitment during an understandably difficult period. "
