The body of a North Yorkshire woman who was shot dead in Turkey has been returned to the UK. Her 24-year-old son and 87-year-old mother were also injured by a gunman.

Man held after British woman is shot dead in Turkey

A Turkish gardener said to have a grudge against a British family who own a villa there has been arrested after three members of the family were shot. One of them, the owner, Anne Bury, died.

From Turkey, our Europe Correspondent Emma Murphy reports:

The family had apparently reported the gardener to the police the day before, for making death threats, but they let him go.

The villa is in southern Turkey in the town of Dalyan. The family had just celebrated Mrs Bury's birthday around the pool when the attack took place.

A man is due to appear in court after giving himself up following the shooting of three generations of a Northallerton family in Turkey. The 46-year-old gardener, known only as V.A. had reportedly argued with mother Catherine Bury, 56, on Friday.

She fled the gunman and locked herself in the bathroom but he shot through the door and shot her four times with a shotgun.Catherine's mother, 87-year-old Cecille and son, 24-year-old Alex, were also shot and are now fighting for their lives.

Residents shocked by Turkey shooting

Shocked residents in the quiet fishing village of Dalyan, Turkey have expressed their horror at the savage shooting of three generations of a family from Northallerton.

They were quiet and respectable people. They kept themselves to themselves. They've been coming here for the last six years but we only knew them to say 'Hi' to.

We didn't hear anything. The first thing we knew was when the jandarma arrived. I was horrified to see the elderly lady bought out of the house. It's a really dreadful thing to happen.

A man from North Yorkshire remains in hospital after being one of three members of the same family who was shot while on holiday in Turkey.

Alex Bury, 24, was shot along with his mother, Catherine, 56, and grandmother, Cecille, 87, in the same attack in the fishing village of Dalyan. The family had been celebrating Catherine's birthday at their villa when a gardener allegedly opened fire.

Catherine Bury, also known as Anne, died from her wounds while Alex and Cecille were taken to hospital.

Family targeted in Turkey shooting

Three generations of the same family from North Yorkshire have been shot by a Turkish gunman while on holiday.

The Bury family, from Swainby near Northallerton, were celebrating a birthday at their villa in the fishing village of Dalyan when the gardener allegedly opened fire.

Catherine Bury, 56, has been killed while her mother, Cecille, 87, and son, Alex, 24, were both taken to hospital.

Turkish authorities investigating shootings

A statement issued by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism said:

"The death of British citizen Catherine Anne Bury, and the wounding by shooting of her son Alexander Gerard Bury and mother Cecilia Bury, in Turkey's south-western town of Dalyan yesterday is currently being investigated by the relevant authorities.

"The chief suspect has been arrested and is currently under custody, while a full investigation is under way.

"Cecilia Bury has been discharged from hospital while Alexander Gerard Bury is in a stable condition there."

Neighbour "horrified" after Turkey shooting

Residents in a quiet Turkish fishing village have expressed their horror at the shooting of three generations of the same family.

Catherine Bury, 56, from Swainby in North Yorkshire, was allegedly shot by her gardner in the village of Dalyan along with her mother and son. Ms Bury, also known as Anne, has died while her mother, Cecille, 87, and son, Alex, 24, have been taken to hospital.

One neighbour, Ozman Tugcu, who lives behind the Bury's villa, said:

"They were quiet and respectable people. They kept themselves to themselves. They've been coming here for the last six years but we only knew them to say 'Hi' to.

"We didn't hear anything. No shooting - nothing. The first thing we knew was when the Jandarma (Special Forces Unit) arrived. I was horrified to see the elderly lady bought out of the house. She was covered in blood. I was sure was dead and am astonished she survived. It's a really dreadful thing to happen."
