A hole which appeared on the A695 Chainbridge Road, in Blaydon, was down to electrical work, it has been confirmed.

Early reports on Friday morning suggested the hole which appeared was a sinkhole.

However, Gateshead Council confirmed the hole was down to contractors to repair an electrical fault.

The hole appeared on Thursday night and was due to be filled back in by Friday afternoon.

Traffic delays in Blaydon could have been down to an electrical fault - and not a sinkhole.

Our reporter has been to the A695 Chainbridge Road where she spoke to workmen who said the delays were down to an electrical fault.

Northumbria Police said they have been to the scene and could not find a sinkhole.
