The number of times teenagers have been admitted to hospital after self-harming has almost doubled in the last four years in some parts of the North East.
The research carried out by ITV News Tyne Tees reveals many young people are struggling to cope at school or deal with issues in family life.
At the start of Children's Mental Health week one expert has told us the issue is epidemic among teenagers.
Our reporter Julie Harrison has been talking to young people who self harmed in the past.
