Strong waves cause Roker's North Pier to collapse

The severe weather and rough seas have caused part of the North Pier at Roker in Sunderland to collapse.

The landmark has been closed to the public for a number of years.

Firefighters are working to clear mounds of snow that have gathered on the hillside above the westbound A690.

The carriageway is expected to remain closed for a time longer as Northumbria Police have deemed re-opening it too risky for drivers.

No services running north of Newcastle on Virgin Trains East Coast

Rail passengers have been urged not to travel on Saturday by Virgin Trains East Coast.

They say they are unable to run any services north of Newcastle.

On our east coast route, due to extreme weather conditions we continue to advise customers not to travel today (Saturday 3 March). We are unable to run any services north of Newcastle.

For customers who would prefer to postpone their travel, tickets will also be valid for your journey on any Virgin Trains East Coast service between Sunday 4th March and Wednesday 7th March inclusive.

A full refund will be available to those who choose not to travel."
