The mobile phone operator EE, owned by Orange and T-mobile, has unveiled plans for superfast 4G services in cities including Newcastle.
They say the technology will offer speeds up to five times faster than the current 3G service.
However its competitors are threatening legal action over the decision to allow EE to go ahead.
It's hoped 4G will be operating in Newcastle by Christmas, with 98 per cent of the country connected by 2014.
