Lifeboat call-out for kayaker in Cullercoats

An RNLI inshore lifeboat crew was called to an emergency just off the North Tyneside coast when a person using a kayak - a kind of canoe - was reported to be in difficulty in the water.

The emergency was reported to be taking place at Cullercoats, North Tyneside, and a crew from Tynemouth RNLI responded.

A spokesman for the Coastguard service said that the kayaker managed to make his own way ashore.

Man armed with knife robs Cullercoats shop

Police are appealing for witnesses following a shop robbery in Cullercoats, North Tyneside.

It's the second time this shop has been robbed recently.

A man entered the One Stop shop, on Saint George's Road, at 8pm on 20 February. He was carrying a knife and demanded money from the till.

He stole an undisclosed quantity of cash and left. No one was injured during the robbery.

The man is described as white, 6 feet 2" tall, thin, with blue eyes.

"We're asking for help from the public to identify and locate the offender and would ask for anyone with information about this incident to come froward.

"This is the second time this store has been robbed recently, the first happened at 9.58pm on Monday, February 13. We are keeping an open mind as to whether the two incidents are linked."
