Weather: Storm Eleanor - warning UPGRADED

Weather warnings surrounding Storm Eleanor have been upgraded for parts of our region.

The Met Office have issued an AMBER 'Be Prepared' warning for strong winds.

The deepening area of low pressure will bring gales and severe gales to northern England and Southern Scotland, clearing eastern England during tomorrow morning.

Gusts of 80mph are possible and could well cause some damage overnight.


Replacement taxi services are available between Tynemouth and Monkseaton. There is also a reduced service between St James and Tynemouth due to an obstruction on the line.


Hundreds of homes are without power across the North East and North Yorkshire. Powercuts are affecting 220 properties in Sunderland, 130 in Newcastle, 100 in Durham, around 50 in Northumberland and 40 in North Yorkshire. Northern Powergrid says electricity will be restored today.
