Escaped killer back in hospital

Convicted killer Phillip Westwater, 44, who was dubbed the Black Dog Strangler, has been found and detained after escaping from a secure psychiatric hospital in Newcastle.

Search for convicted killer on the run

Police are searching for a patient who left a secure hospital in Newcastle.

44-year-old Phillip Westwater left St Nicholas Hospital on Jubilee Road in Gosforth, Newcastle, on the morning of Wednesday January 2nd.

Westwater was detained indefinitely under the Mental Health Act.

At 10am on January 2 Mr Westwater was being escorted in the hospital when he asked to go to the toilets from where he escaped.

He left the clothing he had been wearing in the toilets and so police do not have a description of his clothes.

Officers are making enquiries into this individual and risks he may or may not pose.

People are asked to contact police on the 999 emergency number if they see him and not to approach him.
