Alcan land bought by Crown Estate

Farmland around the former smelting plant at Lynemouth in Northumberland has been sold. The plant was mothballed in 2012. The 4500 acres of land around it has been bought by the Queen's property company, the Crown Estate.

Crown Estate buys Alcan land, homes and wind farm

The Crown Estate has bought Rio Tinto's 4,500 acre Alcan Farms agricultural land in Northumberland.

It includes land, farm buildings, 19 homes, and a 13 turbine wind farm leased to Scottish Power Renewables. Under new ownership, it will now be known as the Ellington estate and form part of our 146,000 hectare (360,000 acre) rural land portfolio; one of the largest in the UK.
