30 years since start of miners' strike

The miners' strike started in March 1984 and within days half the country's mineworkers had walked out in protest at pit closures. Thousands of men refused to return to work at pits in the North East pits in protest at government plans to cut jobs.

Wife burnt shoes for warmth during miners' strike

Brenda McDonald was part of a women's support group during the miners' strike. She, and other volunteers, provided food parcels and organised collections for unpaid striking miners in Tyne and Wear. Even though she worked part-time, she has five children and says money was still a problem.
