Mother fined for buying alcohol for children

A mother in Cramlington has been fined for buying alcohol for children.

Through the Shopwatch scheme, officers had reports of a group of young people drinking in Seven Oaks Park on May 2.

Two girls and two boys, aged between 14 and 16, were spoken to and 20 bottles of beer were seized.

CCTV footage showed one child's parent buying alcohol for them. She was given an £80 fixed penalty notice.

"We will always take action when we find that adults have been buying alcohol for children.

"By giving children alcohol they are potentially putting them in danger and making them vulnerable. Also, children under the influence of alcohol are more likely to be involved in crime or anti-social behaviour.

"We have done some work recently that shows the majority of alcohol we seize from children has been purchased by parents. I'd warn them against doing this - they could be putting their children at risk and they face having action taken against them by police."
