A group of environmental campaigners calling themselves 'Matt Ridley's Conscience' have taken over mining equipment at Shotton Surface Mine near Cramlington in Northumberland.

The group have taken their name from the owner of the Blagdon Estate, Viscount Ridley, who's land houses part of Shotton Surface Mine.

The campaigners want coal extraction to cease as they believe burning coal contributes to climate change.
