Unsafe scaffolding closes Newcastle city centre street

Unsafe scaffolding in Newcastle city centre has forced the emergency road closure of Newgate Street. The street could be closed for up to 24 hours as the scaffolding on the redevelopment of the former Newgate Shopping centre is worked on.

A Newcastle City Council spokesman said:

Contractors have informed us this morning that the temporary scaffolding fronting onto Newgate Street has become unsafe on the redevelopment of the former Newgate Shopping Centre.

In the interest of public safety, the City Council has agreed to an emergency road closure on Newgate Street so that the scaffold can be safely removed. Work to close the road is beginning now.

We are sorry for the inconvenience caused to traffic, pedestrians and local businesses but we expect the majority of work to be completed within 24 hours. We will issue further updates if there are any changes to the situation."
