Newcastle University student dies after drinking 'excessive amount of alcohol'

A Newcastle University student has died after what police describe as 'consuming an excessive amount of alcohol'.

At 5:45am on Tuesday, December 13, Northumbria Police received a report from the RVI of a man who was brought to hospital in a life threatening condition,

On Wednesday, December 14, the 20-year-old man sadly died while in hospital.

An investigation into his death has been passed to the coroner and police are assisting them with their enquiries.

A spokesperson for Newcastle University said:

"It is with deep sadness we can confirm the death of one of our students. At the family's request, we have nothing further to add at this time."

Jack Taylor, President of Newcastle University Students' Union said:

"I think it is fair to say that we are still in shock after hearing about the death of one of our students.

"Words can't express how saddened we are to hear of this devastating news.

"We don't have any further details at this stage but our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this most difficult time.

"I'm sure our whole student body would join me in offering our deepest heartfelt condolences to his family.

"I understand the University welfare services are offering additional support to his friends and other students who may also be affected by the tragic news."
