North East commuters are set to face disruption on Friday with a 24-hour strike on Northern rail services.

Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union members are walking out after talks broke down in a dispute over the role of train guards.

The rail company says it is adding carriages to services in operation around Middlesbrough, Whitby and Bridlington to help the support the first day of the Tour de Yorkshire.

The union said it was "angry and frustrated" that the company had rejected a proposal to invite Transport Department officials to join talks aimed at reaching a solution.

The rail company says it is committed to keeping customers moving during the industrial action:

"We expect to run more than 40 per cent of our normal timetable, and more than 300 additional rail replacement buses.

All services are expected to be extremely busy, with industrial action taking place on the Friday before the bank holiday weekend and the first day of the Tour de Yorkshire cycle event.
