Motorists using the A1 are being warned they could face delays during the rush hour on Thursday morning following a lorry fire near Chester-le-Street.

The fire started on Wednesday evening close to junction 63 on the southbound carriageway.

It is not known how the fire started, but it has since been put out by the fire service.

Drivers will be able to use the second lane of the southbound stretch of the A1, but lane one and the hard shoulder will remain closed between junctions 63 and 62 so that the damage to the road surface from the fire can be assessed.

Durham Police are warning commuters to plan ahead if they need to use that stretch of road on Thursday morning.

Further to the report of a vehicle on fire on A1M southbound between junctions 63 & 62, the vehicle will remain in situ until tomorrow morning, resulting in the hard shoulder & lane one remaining closed, due to damage to the road surface.

Lane 2 is now reopen. Delays are expected tomorrow during commuter times. Please allow extra time for your journey or seek alternative route."
