Power restored to homes after fire at Saltburn substation

Electricity to homes cut off when an underground cable burst into flames on Teesside has now been restored.

More than 25,000 homes were cut off after what witnesses described as an explosion at an electricity substation in Saltburn just before 7 o'clock on Monday night. No one was injured.

Power was restored to 22,000 customers within half an hour and to many more through the night.

By 3pm on Tuesday Northern Powergrid said power to all homes had been restored.
