Public prosecutor Dayan Krishna told a Delhi court that all four men convicted of the rape and murder of a young woman attacked on a bus last December should face the death penalty.
Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh Singh were found guilty of rape and murder yesterday.
Judge Yogesh Khanna has started hearing arguments from the prosecution and defence at a sentencing hearing. He may deliver the sentence later in the day or defer the decision.
A fifth suspect died after hanging himself in his jail cell.
Another defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was 17 at the time of the attack and tried as a minor. He was sentenced to three years at a juvenile detention centre at the end of August.
