Michael Douglas has paid tribute to his estranged wife Catherine Zeta Jones as he won an Emmy for his role as Liberace in the biopic film Behind the Candelabra. But Downton Abbey and the British star of Homeland, Damian Lewis, left empty-handed.

Emmy Awards: The winners and losers

It was a good night for US stars at the Emmy Awards, particularly for Behind the Candelabra, the Liberace biopic starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.

However, Britain did not fare so well at the prestigious TV honours and ITV's Downton Abbey, nominated in 12 categories, took home a solitary gong.
