Alistair Darling to stand down as Labour MP at 2015 general election

Former Chancellor Alistair Darling has announced he will stand down as a Labour MP at the next election.

Mr Darling, who entered Parliament in 1987, recently led the successful Better Together campaign to keep Scotland as part of the United Kingdom.

He served as Chancellor between 2007-2010 after a holding a range of Cabinet roles following Labour's election in 1997.

Labour MPs have paid tribute to Alistair Darling following reports the former chancellor will stand down as an MP at the next election.

Conservative MP Matt Hancock also paid tribute to Mr Darling from across Parliament's benches.
