Co-pilot was 'flying AirAsia plane' when it crashed

The co-pilot of AirAsia Flight QZ8501 was flying the passenger jet when it crashed last month, officials have said.

It was last week reported that the plane was climbing at a speed "beyond normal" before stalling.

Recovery efforts are still underway following the crash, which left all 162 on board dead.

AirAsia flight loses contact after 'asking for unusual route'

An AirAsia flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic control shortly after asking for an unusual route.

Transport officials said flight number QZ 8501 lost contact with the Jakarta air traffic control tower at 6.17 a.m local time (11.17pm GMT).

It was due to land in Singapore at 8.30am local time (12.30am GMT) but has still not arrived.

AirAsia says it has launched an investigation into what has happened.
