Stricken Solent ship towed back to shore

Nineteen days after it was deliberately grounded on a sandbank in the Solent, the stranded car carrier Hoegh Osaka has been towed back to shore.

The Hoegh Osaka was deliberately run aground on a sandbank between Southampton and the Isle of Wight on January 3rd when crew realised it was in trouble.

A rescue operation is under way after a cargo ship ran aground in the Solent off the Isle of Wight.

The RNLI said the ship’s crew are being rescued from the water and from on board the stricken vessel, which is at a list of 45 degrees.

Four RNLI lifeboats are in attendance alongside the Solent coastguard helicopter which is airlifting 25 crew members including one person who suffered injuries when the ship ran aground.
