Lord Ashcroft: Tories still toxic on the NHS

Conservative peer Lord Ashcroft has tonight published polling that suggests the health service is still a toxic area for his party.

When asked which party had the best approach to the health service, 47% said Labour, compared to just 29% for the Tories.

Writing in the Guardian, Lord Ashcroft blames the Tories' problem on the fact that the "decontamination of the party brand was never completed", leading voters to mistrust their motivations for reforming the health service.

"Its modernisation will be complete when it is trusted to sustain and reform the NHS: the matter does not have to be the Tories’ perpetual political millstone," he adds.
