Tens of thousands gather in London for huge anti-austerity rally

Thousands of people are set to attend a massive anti-austerity demonstration in central London today - including public figures like Charlotte Church and Russell Brand.

With people travelling from across the UK to attend, organisers are hoping that the protests - which will also be held in Glasgow.

Marchers will travel from the City of London to Westminster, where Church and Brand are expected to address the crowds alongside trade union leaders Len McCluskey and Matt Wrack, the Labour leadership contender Jeremy Corbyn, and Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness.

Anti-nuclear activists join London austerity protest

Anti-nuclear activists are among those taking part in a major demonstration in central London today. Kate Hudson, general secretary of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, said mass mobilisation was key to persuading the new Government not to renew the Trident nuclear weapons.

Lindsey German, convenor of the Stop The War Coalition, meanwhile said: "I will be marching because I am fed up with all the main parties saying they are going to promote austerity. They have made the rich richer and the poor poorer and they're going to continue."
