Lionesses return home with World Cup bronze

The England Women's World Cup team has arrived back in Heathrow after pulling off the best finish by any England team at a World Cup since the men were victorious in 1966.

Fara Williams' extra-time penalty against Germany in Edmonton handed the Lionesses a 1-0 win that secured them a bronze medal in the tournament.

USA were the tournament's overall winners after beating Japan 5-2 in the final.

Prince William: Lionesses are doing country proud

England women's football team are "doing their country proud" after progressing to the World Cup semi-finals, Prince William has said.

The Duke of Cambridge said he was "thrilled" to see England beat hosts Canada, adding that he could not wait to see Mark Sampson's team face Japan.

"As President of the FA I'm thrilled to see the England women progress to the semis for the first time," the duke said in a statement.

"This team is making history and I can't wait to see them in action against Japan."

"The Lionesses are doing their country proud."
