At least four dead as Typhoon Soudelor hits Taiwan

A powerful typhoon battered Taiwan last night killing at least four people, officials said.

Typhoon Soudelor hit early Saturday morning bringing up to 1,000mm (39 inches) and winds of up 124mph and around two million people are without power.

Forecasters predict the typhoon could be worse than Hurricane Katrina.

Deadly mudslides amid 'one of the worst' typhoons

A deadly typhoon battered Taiwan with powerful wind and torrential rain, sparking mudslides and cutting power to nearly three million households and killing four people.

"This is one of the worst typhoons I have ever seen," said a sewage station engineer surnamed Jiang, who was inspecting pumping stations.

Local television footage showed a devastating mudslide sweeping through a mountain village, as the eye of Typhoon Soudelor passed Taiwan.

In New Taipei City, rescue workers helped people evacuate their homes after flash floods enveloped the area.
