US air strikes hit Taliban held Afghan city Kunduz

US military planes attacked Taliban positions in air strikes on the outskirts of the fallen northern Afghan city of Kunduz in the early hours of this morning, a Nato spokesman has confirmed.

The attack at about 9 am (4am UK time) marked the first US air strike to defend the city.

The air strikes came as Afghan national forces launched a counterattack against Taliban fighters who seized control of Kunduz on Monday, the government said.
