The White House have said the families of hostages killed in Syria were contacted about the strike which is believed to have killed Mohammed Emwazi before reports of it were made public.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest said:
I can confirm that a number of families of hostages who have been killed in Syria were contacted in advance of public reports to let them know that this operation had taken place.
The IS militant known as "Jihadi John" always "knew he would die", a journalist who met the British terrorist said.
However good Islamic State's operational security, Jihadi John was going to be found and killed - it was only a question of timing.
Even if Mohammed Emwazi, known as Jihadi John, has been killed, the appeal of Islamic State to potential recruits is unlikely to decline.
