New Year's Eve celebrations are taking place around the world to mark the arrival of 2016.

Millions across the UK are celebrating the start of the new year, with tens of thousands attending firework displays in London and Edinburgh.

Astronaut Tim Peake releases Hogmanay message

British astronaut Tim Peake has broadcast a Hogmanay message for Scotland from onboard the International Space Station.

"I've enjoyed celebrating Hogmanay on many occasions in Scotland," he said.

"As much as I'd love to be down there with you celebrating this evening, I think this year I've found the perfect place to see in 2016."

Ahead of midnight Peake's message will be broadcast to as many as 75,000 revellers who have gathered to celebrate Hogmanay in the streets of Edinburgh.
